In today's society, the criminal justice reform movement faces many difficult challenges. Mandatory sentences for first-time offenders are fast filling existing prisons within a system that is already over budget and without funds. The severe economic problems faced by the state of Oregon, together with the lack of funds for education, rehabilitation, and treatment programs for prisoners, makes the work of those of us dedicated to advocating for reforms in the criminal justice system more important than ever.
Our mission at Oregon CURE is to reduce crime by advocating for effective criminal justice policies and programs. Oregon CURE encourages pro-family policy throughout the corrections system in improved visiting guidelines and pre-release programs. We advocate to improve treatment programs, broaden education and job training, reform sentencing laws and parole guidelines, advocate for legislation that promotes effective corrections policies, and support effective transition programs from prison back into the community. Toward this end, we:
- Maintain an extensive library of publications that we provide to anyone who needs assistance in dealing with prison and corrections issues;
- Maintain a website listing available publications and other pertinant information;
- Publish a quarterly newsletter, which we provide free of charge to members, prisoners, and others interested in requesting it;
- Provide monthly orientations to the Oregon corrections system, in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Corrections, to families and friends of recently imprisoned love ones; and
- Hold monthly regional support group meetings for families and friends of prisoners.
